	ACOUSTIC GUITAR ANNOUNCES 2008 PLAYERS’ CHOICE AWARDS Acoustic Guitar readers selected their favorite guitars, accessories, performing and recording gear, instructional resources, and artists in the 2008 Players’ Choice Awards. CANADIAN CONSUMER ELECTRONICS GIANT GETS INTO GUITAR BUSINESS In a move that parallels Best Buy’s leap into the musical instrument fray, Canadian electronics retailer Future Shop opened a sizable musical instrument store within its new (and largest ever) store, in Edmonton, Alberta. The store features acoustic instruments from Washburn and Jay Turser alongside a wide selection of electric instruments and DJ gear. There are no formally declared plans to expand the musical instrument program, but Future Shop currently operates 139 stores across Canada, suggesting a considerable musical instrument retailing opportunity should the pilot store prove successful. FENDER UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES SPRING SESSION Fender University, an innovative marketing effort and music education program whose first session brought together music workshops, a factory tour of the company’s Corona, California facility, and performances by celebrity players including Willy Porter, was successful enough in its fall 2008 incarnation to return for a spring session on March 4–8, 2009.

	FIRST ACT DK1000 HI-FI IPOD DOCKING STATION AND AMP First Act has released a new package that helps players interact more immediately with the music that influences their own playing: the DK1000 docking station and amplifier. The DK1000, which borrows more than a few styling cues from guitar amplifiers of the late ’60s and early ’70s, marries a 40-watt amplifier and two four-inch speakers with an iPod docking station and ¼-inch guitar input, a feature that enables players with pickup-equipped acoustics to plug in and jam along with their entire digital music collection—all in a single compact unit that fits on a tabletop or shelf.
