IN MEMORY
Singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt died on New Year's Day at his home in Smyrna, Texas, of an apparent heart attack. Van Zandt was born on March 7, 1944, to a prominent oil family in Fort Worth. Inspired by the music of Hank Williams, Lightning Hopkins, Elvis Presley, and Bob Dylan, he abandoned his patrimony to become a musician. In 1968, Van Zandt recorded his first album, For the Sake of the Song. Twelve more albums followed, which influenced a generation of Texas singer-songwriters, including Nanci Griffith and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. At the time of his death, Van Zandt was working on a boxed set with a group of musicians including Willie Nelson and Freddy Fender, recording new versions of his songs. More on his legacy will appear in an upcoming issue.
Mandolinist John Duffey, founding member of the classic Country Gentlemen and the popular bluegrass band the Seldom Scene, died December 10 of complications stemming from a heart attack. He was 62. Duffey was inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Association's Hall of Fame in September. He was also awarded the Washington Area Music Association's award for best bluegrass vocalist and was inducted with the Seldom Scene into the WAMA Hall of Fame. Duffey is survived by his wife, Nancy.
