In case you didn't get a close look, k.d. lang played a RainSong graphite guitar during the "coming out" episode of Ellen.

The Joni Mitchell Web page (recently relocated to www.jonimitchell.com), created by Wally Breese, became a vehicle for a reunion of Mitchell and the child she gave up for adoption in 1965. The daughter, Kilauren--now a mother herself--found some bio facts on the site that clued her in that Mitchell might be her mother, and an Email to Breese eventually led to a reunion in April.

Chicago bluesman Fruteland Jackson won the 1997 Keeping the Blues Alive/Blues in Education award at the Handy Awards in May.

Guitarist and mandolinist Mike Marshall, banjo player Béla Fleck, and bassist Edgar Meyer will perform at the Aspen Music Festival on August 9. The trio, which plays everything from Bach to new acoustic, will also be performing in October at venues on the East and West Coasts.


NEW RELEASES

Sony/Legacy has rereleased four albums originally recorded between 1967 and 1969 by the Byrds. The four-CD set, which includes Sweetheart of the Rodeo, The Notorious Byrd Brothers, Dr. Byrds and Mr. Hyde, and The Ballad of Easy Rider, has been remastered and includes bonus tracks and previously unreleased alternate takes.

IN MEMORY

Blues mandolinist James "Yank" Rachell died April 9 at his home in Indianapolis. He was 87. He recorded with such artists as Hambone Willie Newbern, Sleepy John Estes, and Sonny Boy Williamson.

The second annual Healdsburg Guitar Festival takes place in Sonoma County, California, August 11-16. Join sponsors Acoustic Guitar magazine and Luthiers Mercantile International for a weeklong celebration of the acoustic guitar. Highlights include the Gallery of Guitars exhibition of custom-made instruments (see page 58 for a preview) and a wide range of playing workshops and guitar-making seminars.
