Cowboy singer Don Edwards will appear as Robert Redford's sidekick, Smokey, in Redford's film of the best-selling novel The Horse Whisperer, which opens in theaters in May.

Danny Barnes of the Bad Livers scored the soundtrack to The Newton Boys, the new Richard Linklater (Slackers, Dazed and Confused) movie starring Matthew McConaughey, Ethan Hawke, and Juliana Margulies.

On January 17, Stanford University hosted the 1998 Conference on Bob Dylan, a gathering of approximately 400 scholars and Bob-ologists from around the world.

NEW RELEASES

Nonesuch/Explorer has reissued the first two volumes of The Real Bahamas on a single CD. The landmark 1966 recording by Peter Siegel and Jody Stecher features the music of Joseph Spence, the Pindar family, and others.

America's Music: Bluegrass, by Barry R. Willis, is a new bluegrass history book. The 640-page tome includes interviews with hundreds of bluegrass heroes and 411 photos and is available from Pine Valley Music, (303) 660-2361.

White Star Video [(800) 458-5887] has released The Real Buddy Holly Story, the first documentary produced and hosted by Paul McCartney.

David Bromberg and Pete Seeger have both received the Legacy reissue treatment. The Player: A Retrospective features the best of Bromberg's Columbia recordings, including some unreleased tracks. Dangerous Songs!? and God Bless the Grass, two classic Seeger recordings from 1966, have never before been available on CD.

The Bluegrass Guitar Style of Charles Sawtelle has been published by High View Publications, (800) 413-8296. The book includes an interview with Sawtelle and transcriptions of 27 of his solos.

The National Guitar Workshop and Alfred Publishing Co. have conspired to produce a series of guitar videos, including A Fingerstyle Summit with Adrian Legg, Martin Simpson, and Ed Gerhard.

IN MEMORY

Rockabilly legend Carl Perkins died on January 19 in Jackson, Tennessee, at the age of 65. Part of the influential Sun Records roster in the '50s, Perkins was a dynamic guitarist and singer whose songwriting produced hits for himself ("Blue Suede Shoes"), Johnny Cash ("Daddy Sang Bass"), and the Judds ("Let Me Tell You About Love").
