PLAYLIST CD REVIEWS Eric Roche, Live & Inspirational Recorded live shortly prior to the guitarist’s untimely death in 2005, Live & Inspirational captures everything that would have almost certainly made Eric Roche one of the brightest stars on the fingerstyle scene had he not succumbed to cancer. Applying his signature groove to speaker-shaking originals such as “Bushwacker” or “Perc-U-Lator,” covers that include Van Halen’s “Jump,” Nirvana’s “(Smells Like) Teen Spirit,” and Dave Brubeck’s classic “Take 5,” or more contemplative pieces like “The Road to Brecon,” Roche proves to be a master of solo guitar composition, arranging, and performance. Documenting an entire concert, Live & Inspirational includes stage banter and introductions to his tunes, giving the listener an opportunity to take a front-row seat. —Teja Gerken, senior editor Eric Roche, Live & Inspirational is available here. |
Gretchen Wilson, One of the Boys The self-proclaimed “redneck woman” is back again with her third album, following up on her multiplatinum debut, Here for the Party, and successful sophomore effort, All Jacked Up. Teetering precariously between themes of alcohol-fueled debauchery (see “You Don’t Have to Go Home” and “There’s a Place in the Whiskey”) and Wilson’s gender-obsessed posturing (“One of the Boys,” “The Girl I Am,” and “Good Ole Boy”), One of the Boys makes it hard not to feel like one is being subjected to an advertising pitch. Wilson is the product, and she’s hoping you’ll buy into her rough-and-tumble, tomboy/country-girl image. With so much ado (and lines like “I’d kick your butt/If I wanted to”), it’s a bit of a hard sell. Those issues aside, One of the Boys is a surprisingly catchy collection of songs. The swooping hooks on the disc’s title track are enough to get a buzz going, and if you’re still listening when the endearingly wasted breakup ballad “Pain Killer” rolls around, you’ll almost certainly find a few tears in your beer. —Dan Apczynski, associate editor Check out Gretchen Wilson, One of the Boys on iTunes.
