NEW GEAR: Gibson CJ-165. AG Music Editor Andrew DuBrock finds that this gorgeous, small-bodied jumbo guitar has balanced tones and lots of power. Hear how it sounds online.

LESSONS AND MUSIC TO PLAY:
(To access special reader/subscriber features, including audio files and lessons, enter turkey when prompted.)

  • HERE'S HOW: Play Well With Others. Jam sessions offer great fun and collective creativity, but if you don't know how to approach them, they can be awkward or intimidating. Stevie Coyle (of the Waybacks) shows you how to prepare well and adopt the jam spirit that will help you maximize your musical growth—and your fun.

  • THE BASICS: In Sixth Sense, Rich Hinman lays out simple two-note chords, called sixths, that you can use to dress up a melody, add tasty accompaniment to a song, and generally add an appealing texture to your playing.

  • WOODSHED: Bossa Nova for Fingerpickers. Learn how to play bossa nova by adapting your fingerpicking patterns, adding a few new chord shapes, and applying these new techniques over a bossa nova groove. With musical examples and a complete song to play online.

  • LICK OF THE MONTH: Jazz chord master John Stowell shows how he might dress up a ii–V–I–VI–ii–V–I turnaround by adding extra colors to create a more interesting progression. With audio examples.

Also in the November issue: T Bone Burnett talks about his return to songwriting, recording, and touring after producing hit albums for others and masterminding blockbuster film soundtracks; Adam Levy (Norah Jones’ guitarist) sits down with Kelly Joe Phelps for a feature fingerstyle lesson; Frank Ford shows you how to make your own pickguard; David Gans offers tips on how to be a successful and happy opening act; music to Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi” and Bach’s Bourrée in E Minor; profiles of indie-folk singer-songwriter José González and rising Delta-blues star Slick Ballinger; new CD reviews-- Rosa Passos, Tony Gilkyson, Six Strings North of the Border: Volume 3, Imaginational Anthem, Volume Two, and more.

Subscribers gain access to even more online features, including audio files and lessons, via the password included in each issue of Acoustic Guitar.
