SONIC SITKA PROJECT
Luthier Denis Merrill has provided tops from one six-foot Sitka spruce log to a number of the nation’s finest guitar makers in an attempt to compare the sonic results from using the same wood in different instruments. The guitars will be displayed at the 2010 Newport Guitar Festival South Florida, April 16–18, 2010. Participating luthiers include Linda Manzer, Tom Ribbecke, Bryan Galloup, Julius Borges, Charles Fox, and many others. newportguitarfestivalmiamibeach.com
AMERICAN MUSIC & SOUND INAUGURATES MUSIC CREATION DIVISION
In recognition of how the latest generation of audio products is blurring the lines between professional audio and musical instruments, American Music & Sound (AM&S) has launched a new Music Creation Division consisting of the Beyerdynamic, Focusrite, Novation, Fostex, Kurzweil, Nord, Vestax, and Xone brands. “Many of our brands share a common thread—the creation or performance of music,” says AM&S president Lynn Martin. “These products are enabling folks to create music in totally new ways while simplifying what used to be steep learning curves.” The AM&S Pro Audio and Musical Instruments Divisions will remain unchanged.

WALDEN MADERA GUITARS
Walden Guitars has introduced a line of affordable sustainable-wood guitars. The all-solid-wood Madera line will be built with 100 percent FSC-Pure-certified tonewoods such as Sitka spruce, Western red cedar, and South American mahogany. The Madera guitars, which include dreadnought and grand auditorium models in natural and sunburst finishes as well as a classical guitar, will be recognizable by a distinctive headstock embellishment shaped like the Chinese character for “wood.”

MARTIN PERFORMING ARTIST SERIES
C.F. Martin and Co. has introduced a new Performing Artist Series of acoustic-electric guitars. Three models form the foundation of the series: the DCPA1 dreadnought, OMCPA1 orchestra model, and GPCPA1 “grand performance.” All three guitars are built with solid East Indian rosewood back and sides; a solid Sitka spruce soundboard with hybrid scalloped bracing; ebony headplate, fingerboard, and bridge; and a patented mortise-and-tenon neck joint. New features include a neck profile with a slimmer taper at the 12th fret and a smaller bridge design. All Performing Artist Series guitars are equipped with Fishman’s F1 Aura onboard electronics.
